Developing a Student’s Education Portfolio

Education is an essential part of our society. From elementary school to post-secondary education, a bright and well-rounded individual is always needed in order to fulfill our needs as a society. The role of education is so important that it is not just the job of parents, but of every adult, including teachers. For the child to grow up into a productive, responsible adult, he or she must have a well-rounded education that contains practical vocational and interpersonal skills. A well-rounded education will enable a person to function as a professional, as well as a good citizen.

Most parents believe that a well-rounded education will equip their children to enter the workforce in a position of responsibility and to create a strong social network at work. These beliefs are usually correct. However, they do not address the other half of an educational equation, which is skills development. Skills development can take place through many different means, but most of them are focused on what a person can accomplish in a short time period. For example, students with poor math skills or who are unable to follow directions at a glance are not likely to perform well in their daily lives. Likewise, if they lack leadership skills, this will also negatively impact their work environment.

In order to create an effective learning environment, teachers need to be aware of what type of skills and talents a student has, as well as what type of career choices might be possible for that person. To be able to create an environment where students have both the potential to succeed and the motivation to pursue a goal, educators have to know who they are teaching what they want to accomplish, and what types of courses will help to improve the students’ skill sets. In order to make this information available, there is a need for an education portfolio that showcases the skills of students as well as their future career goals.

Education portfolios are created by teachers in various ways, but generally, they include a syllabus, a summary of the student’s academic achievements, a personal statement, letters of recommendation from previous students, as well as a curriculum vitae. A curriculum vitae is a document that documents the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s knowledge, abilities, or experience related to the subject matter that is being taught. In order to create one, educators typically gather all of the materials related to a particular subject, such as worksheets, lesson plans, sample tests, journals, and student projects, etc., and then organize them according to their relevancy to the subject.

In addition to including a syllabus and a summary of a student’s academic achievements, teachers also need to list their specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, visual or auditory processing disorder, dysfunctions, visual-spatial processing disorder, and reading and writing disabilities, and learning disabilities. In some cases, teachers may even use a disability assessment tool to assess their students and determine how they are learning.

An important factor in developing a portfolio is to make sure that the portfolio is completed at least once during the life of a student. This will provide future educators with a record of the student’s educational accomplishments, as well as future employers with a clear description of the skills a student possesses. The portfolio will also provide parents and other people with a reference for future reference.
