Odisha to gain from GST, Dharmendra Pradhan

BHUBANESWAR: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday said Odisha being a consuming State will generate more revenue from goods and services tax (GST) as against manufacturing States.

“In the existing tax system, manufacturing States are benefited while in the GST regime, States where goods and services are consumed will gain more,” Pradhan said.
Addressing a GST outreach programme for oil industry stakeholders, a joint initiative of Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Department of Commercial Taxes, Pradhan said Odisha will be greatly benefited as taxing point has shifted the base from production to consumption.
As Odisha is a consuming State, tax revenue will be buoyant. GST is a pro-reform measure which will facilitate in expanding the tax base. Pradhan called upon all to be part of the historical transition to a new tax system.

The high point of GST is the political unity for one nation, one market and one tax. All parties have come under one umbrella to develop a new tax mechanism for a better India, he said.
Stating that the new tax regime will throw new challenges, Pradhan said there are many areas that need more clarity. He, however, expressed confidence that technological initiatives will ensure successful implementation, usher in transparency and promote ease-of-doing business.
The GST outreach programme is essentially intended to bring all stakeholders to a common platform and this programme provided an opportunity to the tax payers to seek necessary clarifications from tax authorities, he said.

For the first time in history, tax officials are meeting traders and explaining the new tax system which was never heard of, Pradhan said and added that more such programmes will be organised in different parts of the State by oil PSUs to educate people about GST.
Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Saswat Mishra and Chief Commissioner, Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax Rakesh Sharma explained all the queries raised by the participants.
