Salient Features of Weather during December 2020 and January
2021 over Odisha
Bhubaneswar : Dry weather prevailed over the districts of Odisha in all
days during the Period 1st December 2020 to 31st January
2021 except isolated rain reported in some districts of
Odisha on 30th Jan, 2021. During last 10 years period, in
the month of December dry weather also observed in 2013
and in the month of January dry weather observed in 2014
and 2018. The rainfall statistics for last 10 years for
December and January months over Odisha is depicted in
Table.1.
 Both monthly mean temperatures and monthly mean maximum
temperatures in the month of December 2020 were above
normal by more than 2⁰C at some places over northwest
Odisha. However monthly mean minimum temperatures were
near normal during December 2020 in most of the places
except in Sambalpur where it was above normal by more than
2⁰C. Distribution of Monthly mean temperature, mean Maximum
temperature and mean minimum temperature for December 2020
are depicted in Fig. 1(a,b,c) respectively.
 Monthly mean temperatures, mean maximum temperatures and
mean minimum temperatures in the month of January 2021
were above normal at most places over the districts of
Odisha with monthly mean maximum temperature above normal
by more than 2⁰C at many places over the district of
Odisha(especially over interior Odisha). Distribution of

Monthly mean temperature, mean Maximum temperature and
mean minimum temperature for January 2021 are depicted in
Fig. 2(a,b,c) respectively. Among the last 10 years,
monthly average maximum and monthly average minimum
temperatures for the month of January 2021 were very high
in many stations of Odisha. In Bhubaneswar city monthly
average maximum and monthly average minimum temperatures
for the month of January 2021 were 31.0⁰C and 17.4⁰C
respectively which are the highest values in the last 10
years (2012 -2021).
 Cold wave conditions at a few places over districts of
interior Odisha were prevailed during 21st to 24th December,
2020. In the month of January, 2021 only over Jharsuguda
District cold wave condition for two days (16th and 17th
January, 2021) only.
 In January,2021; significant number of strong easterly
waves consecutively passed through Peninsular India
causing excessive rainfall over south Peninsular states of
India and apparently under its influences in lower
troposphere levels easterly winds penetrated for longer
period in many parts of Odisha which may be one of the
causes for higher maximum and minimum temperature over
districts of Odisha.
